Blood donations are especially important during a pandemic, in order to guarantee the supply of these life-saving blood components. Based on an evaluation of laboratory data from people infected with SARS-CoV-2, the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut, in conjunction with three virological institutes, is able to prove that SARS-CoV-2 cannot be transmitted via blood donated by asymptomatic persons. This means that blood donation continues to be possible if the hygiene rules are observed.
