The Paul Ehrlich and Ludwig Darmstaedter Prize 2020

The Paul Ehrlich and Ludwig Darmstaedter Prize 2020

Prof. Sakaguchi presents his groundbreaking work on T cells – the blue helmets of the immune system – at the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut.

At an early stage, Prof. Shimon Sakaguchi recognised the importance of regulatory T cells for immune tolerance. These cells help the immune system to stay in balance and to differentiate between friend and foe. Any errors in this differentiation can lead to serious diseases such as cancer or autoimmune disorders, e.g. rheumatism or multiple sclerosis. Prof. Sakaguchi’s research into T cells therefore offers potential approaches for the development of treatments for immune system disorders.
